Ruger American 9 - The Ruger American Compact adds another option to the polymer-frame pistol for today's shooter. In the near future, James will review a Ruger Compact without a thumb safety. That will be on TFBTV. The reason, of course, is that we wanted to present both models to our readers so that they not only have two points of view, but also consider the merits of the model with and without thumb protection. Both pistols are chambered in 9mm.
There has been some misunderstanding regarding the capabilities of this compact pistol, so let me clarify. The Ruger Compact comes with a recessed magazine that holds 12 rounds, while the second magazine holds 17 rounds with an extension collar so the longer magazine appears to extend the length of the grip.

The thumb safety is located in the same position as the 1911, but requires a bit more reach to handle. Thumb security is as vague as magazine releases. The thumb safety has a very short throw so it is very easy to use depending on the size of your hand. Placing the shooting hand's thumb on the safety is not practical due to the reach and size of the grip. Another accessory is the choice of a back strap. The compact comes with a small, medium and large liner. Using a smaller liner allows the thumb safety to be used like you would use a thumb safety on a 1911.

So what do I like about the compact? First let me say that I love finger protection. I know many will disagree, and if that's okay, we all have our preferences. Even if you buy a thumb safety model, it doesn't mean you have to use it, and it doesn't change the price. Unlike the Glock, at least the Ruger offers the consumer the choice of having a manual safety or not. Both models have a rail for attaching a compact light or laser to the gun. While the trigger feels better than a stock Glock, it breaks unpredictably when the firing pin is released. It's not bad, you just have to get used to it. I definitely like the shape of the trigger. It doesn't twist like most polymer guns. The curve is the minimum that gives the best response.
After I disassembled and oiled the pistol, I took it to the range and fired a total of 500 rounds of Armscore rounds on several occasions, as well as some new Creedmoor JHP rounds (more on this new ammo later). I had no glitches during testing. It shot every type of ammo I had without a problem. I prefer the very straight backstrap that you can only get with the compact if you use the little grip insert. Using the middle insertion bump it creates is a bit much for my taste, but I'm sure many will find it works well for them. I like the idea of including a high capacity pistol magazine in your second magazine.
While not a match gun, it is accurate in combat and will work well at social distances. Between this very good reliability and good accuracy, this compact Ruger will definitely get the job done. It should inspire confidence in the owner. As with any gun practice, practice and more practice!
MSRP is $579, which translates to a final price of $500-$525 or so. This puts it firmly in the same price range as Glock and other Stryker polymer pistols.
