Ruger is the largest firearms manufacturer in the United States. The company was founded in 1949 by Bill Ruger and Alexander Sturm. From 2009 to 2012, the company dominated the handgun market and was second only to Remington in the firearms industry. However, with Remington out of the picture, that may change. However, when looking at the total number of firearms produced, Ruger comes out on top. It's for a good reason, trust me.

As a longtime Ruger gun owner, I can sum up the brand in three words: solid construction, reliable operation, and great customer support. The Ruger SR1911 Commander is no exception. First, let's go back in time and learn a little about Ruger's history, and then we'll take a look at this gun.

Bill Ruger and Alexander Sturm got together in 1949 with the express purpose of building one gun – the .22LR semi-automatic pistol. Ruger has grabbed a WWII Japanese Numbu pistol or two and successfully copied it into a new design. After partnering with Sturm, he set up shop in a rental machine shop in Southport, Connecticut. He liked the look of the Numbu, as did the German Luger and Colt Woodsman pistols.

In an attempt to combine all three rifles into one, they came up with the Ruger Standard – the company's open-ended rifle. This .22 pistol was so popular that the Sturm, Ruger put it firmly on the firearms manufacturing map. You should know that this happened four years after the end of World War II. Thousands of men and women came from various branches of the military.

At the height of the war, we had 16 million uniforms and many people brought love to take home with them. He didn't want to fight anymore. They prefer some informal hunting or plinking. Some participate in competitions.

Unfortunately, many of them were back in uniform when the Korean conflict turned into full-scale war in June 1950. But I digress - there wasn't enough civilian gun fun back then. It took some time for the manufacturer to back it up for the civilian market. By designing and selling a standard pistol, Ruger saw this situation and got a jump on the market.

The Ruger Standard Pistol was called the Mk I. I had one of those pistols when I was a band director in a small building school company and had it for three years. After I left, my high school band got together as a going away gift and bought me a Ruger Mk I. It was straight to the static scenes. MK looks like this to me.

When Alex Sturm died in 1951, the red color in the Ruger logo was replaced by black. It was black until it came out of "mourning" in 1999, the company's 50th year. Ruger's first two years of original red logo guns command a premium for collectors.

The .22 pistol was followed by more handguns and rifles, and eventually shotguns were added to the mix. Here are some hints about the company.

Ruger Sr1911 Custom Shop Review

I have owned several Ruger guns over the years. I once (or now) own(ed) the aforementioned Mk. I Pistol Standard, 7.5-inch .45 Colt Blackhawk, 5.5-inch .45 Colt / .45 ACP Blackhawk, 7.5-inch Super Blackhawk, 4.62" Single Six .22LR, Two 10/22 Rifles, 22/4 Mk. (Standard Updated, but with adjustable sights and a 1911 grip angle, not the Luger grip angle that the Mk. I mimics), and the Ruger American .45 ACP pistol.

This is what I remember - maybe someone else is hiding in the foggy recesses my brain was summoning. (I can see old inventory, but you know). I've owned a lot of Rugers since the mid-70s, so now I think I know a thing or two about the company and its products.

Before we delve into the rest of this work, let's look at what the word "commander" meant in the world of 1911.

1911s come in one of three basic lengths. By length, I mean overall length (including barrel length). If the OAL is long, the barrel must also be long. The opposite is also true. At any rate, the Model 1911 evolved into three different main lengths, with several variations built-in. However, the main sub-set sizes are as follows.

Eight round magazine. The website says it comes with two 7-rounders but this gun comes with two 8-round mags.

And, there's something everyone needs - a portable cleaning kit. This is Tipton's Tactical Pistol Kit.

I can get this test gun in 9mm, but for me, the 1911 is the best .45 ACP proposition. (I say more because the 10mm has found its home in the 1911 family and welcomes it). Every time I pick up a 1911 I feel like an old friend. You 1911 fans, you know. A 1911 should be in the gun cabinet.

I love 9mm and build my own rifle in that caliber, as well as reloading. I only like 1911s in .45 or 10mm but would like one in 9mm.

Springfield Garrison Review

One thing about shooting a 1911 is ergonomics. Most 1911s, if in a traditional design (not a double stock) fit the hand well. No exception. I have average sized hands, with baloney fingers (although I can reach 9 majors on a piano keyboard). Even so, the gun is flexible and the magazine baseplate pads help even more. I liked the way it felt.

I shot this gun with (very) many loads. With non-supplied ammunition, I went with a couple of handloads and the factory .45 ACP open, 230-FMJ Fiocchi. I only shot a few rounds but enough to get the gist. As always, the gun is more accurate than me, especially with the dark, cloudy, snowy weather we've been having.

How to take it? Really good. Its corner has two big advantages. It's a well-built 1911 and it's a Ruger. Showing a barrel and bushing made from the same bar stock on the same machine in the accuracy section.

Although my aim is average, in the hands of a top shooter, this gun will be fantastic. Of course, if you want to do an action project, there are only about four zillion gunsmiths to work magic on the 1911. (Speaking of gunsmiths, this gun has a lot of standard features that gunsmiths should have included in the past. It's a full thumb safety/slide release, Novak sights, adjustable trigger, loose ejection port, etc. These and more are standard with the Ruger 1911).

As for the trigger, it broke at about 4 ¾ pounds, with no pick-up and a small amount of creep. With the trigger adjustment screw, overtravel is a thing of the past. This gun has an override taken out at the factory.

Handload, 230-grain RN on a 5.3 grain tight group. Not too bad, I guess. I love that big fat hole.

Three separate groups, but each tight and its own. I say this with tongue firmly in cheek. At least, this load will have something to explore.

I think handloads can be developed and a real barn-burner can be found. I like W231 / HP38 powder in target .45 loads - no time to experiment but no reason for this 1911 not to like that powder (same powder, different name). At least the 1911 eagerly eats 231 pushed cast bullets. For more information on reloading, bullet casting, powder coating, etc., check out the "Ammunition" link at the top of this page. This is a good place to start.

After you're done shooting, you should clean your new Ruger. I won't go into how to disassemble a 1911, as most owners already know how to do this, and those new to the 1911 world can find a quick instructional video online. Speaking of which, here's a great video below from American Handgunner Magazine.

Pay attention to the bushing and point the muzzle in a safe, secure direction as you attempt to reinstall the recoil spring plug and barrel bushing. Things can jump. However, it's not that hard, and if you do it a few times, you'll get the hang of it. One last tip - be careful when resetting the slide release. You can easily scratch the frame if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.

You may want to take a small flat screwdriver (plastic preferred)
