Ruger 1911 .45 - Those who collect certain guns seem to have different personalities. A Glock man can be handy. He has a Glock stock, a full size pistol and possibly a spare. SIG employees value form and finish, but half a dozen pistols meet their needs. Both will appreciate the Ruger SR1911.

A person born in 1911 will own as many guns as they can afford. It has been a long time since I bought the 1911 I needed. A shooter who gets the 1911 bug might have an inexpensive 1911, a few mid-range pistols, and a high-end pistol or two. He is convinced that he needs them all.

I appreciate the 1911 and demand a lot from individual pistols. I know what a properly tuned gun can do. The Ruger SR1911 is one of the best 1911 pistols out of the box and is everything many shooters need. The pistol was introduced not too long ago, but has built a solid reputation as a working 1911 pistol.

Ruger is known for being good value for money. Pistols of the P89 type are reliable and accurate, but very clumsy. When Ruger introduced the SR1911, it was a relatively slim, ergonomic and efficient firearm based on proven principles.

Ruger only had to monitor the quality of production. If anyone thinks Ruger can't make a stylish pistol, the SR1911 puts the lie to that claim.

Ruger introduced the SR1911 as a rugged 1911 with brushed stainless stock. The grip safety, the zipper, the thumb safety and the grip safety stand out nicely in black. The pistol has checkered grips with Ruger emblem.

Although there are a number of variations, the gun pictured is the popular five-inch steel frame .45 ACP. There are also Commander and Officers Model pistols with excellent specifications.

The exterior of the SR1911 is flawless. The machine works flawlessly. The stainless steel slide and frame are well mounted. As the bolt is cocked, the lugs on the detent release smoothly and the gun locks again when the bolt is stopped.

The gun has a somewhat extended thumb safety and a modern beavertail type safety. Trigger pull is tight and smooth at 5.1 lbs. The beavertail safety pulls the hand back into the grip when the handle is gripped. The hand grip safety - when properly depressed - releases the trigger guard approximately halfway through the grip safety.

The checkered body of the mainspring helps the shot keep the gun steady. The slide is a forged unit and the frame is cast. I have no problems with molded parts. Ruger lithium revolvers. These revolvers are the most powerful revolvers available today. They are probably the most powerful revolvers ever made.

The barrel is a standard 1911 .45 ACP five-inch barrel. The two halves of the descending ramp - one on the barrel and the other on the frame - are well polished. There is a necessary clearance of 1/32 inch between the two halves to ensure proper feed security.

The suction is characterized by the tight tension of the sleeve when operated from a battery. Feed, suction and draft are positive, with spent casings ending up in a neat pile about 11 feet to the right. The barrel bushing is well mounted. The fit of the sleeve to the barrel is tight, but not so tight that it cannot be removed by hand.

In the original 1911 design and in almost all modern pistols, the piston tube is a separate overhead part. This is the tube that holds the tension spring that provides tension to operate the slide and thumb safety. I have seen many loose and broken piston tubes over the years. They are not easy to replace and rearrange.

The Ruger design has been modified where the piston tube is part of the frame. This is a great advantage.

An important concern for any gun is drop safety. After the positive action block appeared in the SIG P series, many manufacturers were quick to redesign their pistols. The firing pin on the 1911 is inertia.

When the trigger hits the trigger, it travels forward and hits the cartridge case. Then the bow spring moves the bow back to its original position.

A problem with a free-floating firing pin can be if the gun has been dropped on the muzzle from a sufficient height. The attacker can run forward, reach the cartridge case and fire the gun. To address this problem, Colt introduced the Series 80 firing pin.

The firing pin block holds the firing pin in place until the trigger is fully pulled back. Some consider the striker block an unnecessary complication. Ruger solved this problem in a nice way.

Ruger uses a lightweight titanium spark plug. This lighter striker is less likely to fly forward when the gun is dropped. In addition, the line spring is a particularly strong design.

The gun has Novak fixed sights. The rear sight can be adjusted for windage. A set screw holds the rear sight in place. Loosen the screw and tap the scope to adjust the windage. Novak scopes are the standard by which all other scopes are measured.

The rear sight is angled to prevent the scope from catching on clothing when the gun is drawn. The combination of the square rear notch and the front sight post makes for a great all-round combination.

All my reviews have been added to confirm the gun's build quality. The real test, however, is shooting a gun. The gun was taken to the range with a good mix of .45 ACP loads from Federal, Remington, Winchester and Fiocchi.

The gun was lubricated on the long bearing faces, barrel cap, barrel bushing and lock block. Wilson Combat and Ruger magazines were loaded with 230-grain cartridges.

A quick pull from the custom leather holster produced excellent results. There is no faster gun for an accurate first shot than a full size 1911. The gun hits the target quickly. The sight aligns quickly and the trigger is smooth. Shooting at seven and 10 yards, the gun proved to be quick on target.

It was easy to get solid center shots. Shoot, bounce the gun while controlling the gun, bring it back to the target and shoot again. The Ruger SR1911 is an impressive combat pistol.

Shooting the MTM Case-Gard K-Zone at 25 yards, I fired several groups of three types of 230-grain FMJ ammunition. Ruger can count on 2.5-inch groups at 25 yards. With quality ammo, some groups will be smaller.

Ruger 1911 .45

The most accurate load tested was the Fiocchi 200-grain XTP with a 2.0-inch group. The Ruger SR1911 is well made of good material, reliable and accurate enough for all but the most demanding competition.
