The S&W .500 is the only rifle I don't enjoy shooting. I've shot my friends . 500 many times and enjoy the fact that I can put bullets on target while others (including the owner) can't. I've found the Magtex's 400 gram load to be relatively comfortable. Some 325-350g loads at top speed is a bit brutal. A large S&W .500 will test your concentration and instill discipline. It's a throw-in inducer of epic proportions that will challenge you by blowing a hole in the ground 20' ahead of the line of fire if you let it. Personally, I'm happy with my .44 magnum. A friend of mine sold his .500 and bought a .460 and has been happy ever since. He handled it well. Shooting through the .454 Casull is a joy. The full power of the .45 Colt feels like shooting .22lr ammunition. I love shooting this revolver and the accuracy is amazing. I hope the .500 S&W is right for you. If you reload there is an option to download range ammo and it will help you learn to master the big X-Frame revolver. 460 my friend carries a large Burris adjustable gun bench. The added weight helps with recoil and makes shooting fun. Have fun with your new S&W!
I still beat myself for not buying the 4" ported I found it for $700 and it looks brand new, I have a friend who wants a large one and I was hoping he would buy it so I could take a picture of it. I waited 2 hours and replaced it I thought and went shopping for lunch and a man picked it up Half an hour before getting back there.
I have a 500 S&W in my Encore gun if you are reloading powder the TrailBoss is your friend until you get the hang of it.

Ruger is almost done with the 480 Ruger Alaskan/SRH/SBH If they cut throat to allow use of the 475 Linebaugh they would fall far short of the 500S&W. Without checking I don't know if the cylinders are long enough for the 475L. If so it would take about ten minutes to reprogram the cylinder bores to make that happen. I can't speak for Alaska/ SRH, but the Carpenter steel of the SBH cylinder should handle the extra pressure just fine.

Saleen109, I almost forgot to compliment your new revolver. I used to have a 460S&W and loved it, but your 500 is another level of fun. Congrats on a great gun and a great price!
Usually when I see one for sale it is used and comes with 15 rounds of ammo left in the box.
