Cirrus Aircraft is expanding its Vision Center at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee. It plans to open three new hangars by the end of 2021. Eventually, the Duluth, Minnesota-based company plans to build a new major facility on campus.

Molly McMillin, an aviation journalist for 25 years, is the editor-in-chief of Aviation Week Network's Business Aviation and editor-in-chief of Aviation Week's market intelligence report, The Weekly of Business Aviation. Cirrus life. Now at jet speed. That's the slogan Cirrus Aircraft coined after the market launch of the SF50 Vision Jet at the end of 2016, which positioned itself as the ideal upgrade aircraft for the competent owner of the Cirrus SR22, who already understands and embraces all life's implications.

Groundbreaking For Future Home Of The Cirrus Aircraft Vision Center

In case you don't know, Cirrus Life is about using your aircraft to improve the way you live, in other words, live a better, more fulfilling life because of it.

You can decide for yourself whether you think Cirrus will "satisfy" you emotionally, but the concept certainly hasn't escaped the legion of fans of the Cirrus brand who proudly live the lifestyle.

There is no denying that Cirrus engages buyers emotionally and analytically. Cirrus is "cool" in a way that the Cessna Skyhawk is not. Cirrus said something to its owner that a Piper Cherokee would never do. In this way, Cirrus' approach to aircraft design and marketing is reminiscent of Apple's iPhone. When the new Cirrus is introduced, the aircraft isn't just announced, it's

. It's a big deal, in part because Cirrus has done a great job of making sure it's a big deal.

However, while Apple has the advantage of being located in beautiful Cupertino, California, Cirrus Aircraft is based in Duluth, Minnesota, a decidedly out-of-the-way city that offers visitors the opportunity to entertain themselves by visiting the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Or go ice fishing or snowmobiling during the seemingly eternal winter.

Joke. Duluth is known as the trendiest city in Minnesota, and for good reason. But half the year is cold and dark, and honestly, for most people, you have to really want to be there to get there.

A few years ago, Cirrus realized that to truly project the image the company had worked so hard to create, it needed a new customer-facing aircraft delivery and training center.

Many were taken aback when Cirrus chose Knoxville, Tennessee, as the location for its sleek, modern Vision Center, a campus of buildings and hangars housing the new multimillion-dollar Vision Jet Flight simulators and classrooms, a world-class service center and a delivery "experience" like no other.

Pilot Safe After Emergency Landing

While it might be seen as a roll of the dice by outsiders, Knoxville has proven to be the sweet spot for Vision Center. Home to the University of Tennessee, the scenic Tennessee River, pristine lakes and mountains, and a downtown area that's undergoing a remarkable renaissance, there's so much to see and do here. In addition, the weather is pleasant and suitable to fly year-round, and for most Cirrus customers the flight time is less than two hours - and for many more "on the way" to other destinations.

When I was in Knoxville for three days, experiencing Cirrus Life and what buyers do when they receive their new aircraft at the Vision Center, I began to understand how Cinderella felt at the ball. I had a terrible time going to Knoxville due to the inclement weather in the Northeast. As soon as I got home my truck blew a radiator hose and dumped all my coolant on the freeway, I had to take an Uber to an auto parts store and scramble the side of the road to fix my iPhone flashlight.

My time in Knoxville was pure magic. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Ivy McIver, Cirrus SR22 product line manager, who handed me the keys to this week's ride: a brand new Audi Q7 SUV.

We head to my home away from home, the exquisite Oliver's Boutique Hotel, overlooking Knoxville's bustling Market Square, where Ivy leads us to the bar, a speakeasy with sliding walls instead of doors . The hotel's restaurant was kind enough to stay open late to accommodate us, which I was very grateful for when I arrived in the city late.

The next morning, I hopped in my Audi and headed to McGhee Tyson International Airport, where I toured the Vision Center and had the opportunity to sit down with Stephen Deuker, Vice President of Owner Experience and Facilities Manager. He was employed not by the airline industry, but by the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, where he held a senior management position.

His job is to make Vision Center truly unique. “We don’t just want to be a big company,” he told me, speaking of the vision behind developing the center. "We want to be world class."

This philosophy extends to providing all new Cirrus aircraft buyers with an unparalleled aircraft delivery experience in Knoxville, whether piston or jet. Audi didn't make it available to me because I'm its publisher

Magazine; that's what Cirrus shoppers who buy certain special models get when they arrive. Over the next three days, I will experience incredible experiences, including staying at Blackberry Farm, a world-renowned luxury resort nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains; dining at one of the best restaurants in America; water skiing on the river; and lunch after I managed to fly to Asheville, NC on Vision Jet.

For these select Cirrus customers, this is all normal and expected, Deuker explained. “We wanted to push that to the edge of being obnoxious without crossing that line,” he said of the experience customers can expect when they come to Knoxville to pick up a new plane. "It's a big event in people's lives. We want to make sure it's memorable."
